Twenty-two Year 11 pupils from St Clare's School in Porthcawl undertook their 15-mile expedition as part of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award at the weekend. Four groups set off from Nantymoel in glorious sunshine on Saturday morning, carrying everything they would need for the weekend in their rucksacks. They spent the day following their pre-planned routes down the valley to Bryngarw Country Park where they camped overnight. Sunday dawned very wet but spirits remained high. The camp was packed up and the groups set off along footpaths around the Cefn Cribwr area before finishing in Aberkenfig.

Congratulations to Owen Skelton who won the final of the Engineering Explained slogan competition, hosted by Cardiff University, with his slogan 'Engineering is seeing solutions not problems'. Owen was joined, as part of his prize, by his classmates at Cardiff University last week. All pupils took part in engineering workshops, attended mini-lectures and they were also excited to meet TV presenters Adam Hart-Davies, and John Tickle from TV series Brainiac. Owen was delighted with his personal prize, Robosapien, in addition to having his slogan adorning the Engineering Explained project minibus !

A group of 32 pupils went to the Cwrt-y-Gollen Army Training Camp in Crickhowell last Thursday (10th April).
The children had an army careers talk, after which they were split into three groups where they were taught about survival skills, field craft skills, command tasks, defence skills, team-building skills and physical training. The highlight of the day was where each group had to tackle the 10 foot climbing wall, climbing frame and dismount from the frame via a rope. All thoroughly enjoyed and it was a great day for team building and group unity. A fantastic day all round with children achieving both personally and collectively as a group!

A Saturday morning cookery club, 'Kids Cook Art', has recently started up. Making use of the newly re-furbished Home Economics room, children come along for a one hour 45 minute session and learn the art of cooking. So far we have tempted the taste buds with a honeycomb cheesecake served with a roux shortcake; linguine with sweetcorn, bacon and thyme and this week we will be cooking some classical Chinese dishes, all under the careful supervision of experienced chef Chris Kerslake and his team. A course of lessons runs for 6 weeks on Saturday mornings at a cost of £75 with all ingredients and equipment provided. For more information and to book your child's place on this unique and rewarding experience, please ring Chris on 01633 280916 or email kidscookart@aol.com
