What is Physics?
Physics is the most fundamental of all the sciences and its principals underpin our understanding both of the natural universe and the modern human world.
Aims & Objectives:
To foster an interest in the subject in all pupils whatever their intentions in life and, more particularly, to lay a secure foundation for those intending to pursue the subject to external exam level in more senior years.
You will study:
- In Year 7 : Measurement, Magnetism, Electrostatics, Forces, Astronomy
- In Year 8 : Electricity, Sound, Light, Heat and Temperature, Energy types and Resources
- In Year 9 : DC circuits, Pressure, Energy concepts (in the Spring Term beginning work for GCSE unit one in order to provide a ‘taster’ of GCSE work before options are chosen)
You will learn:
- An interest in the subject that will hopefully make you wish to pursue it in Key Stage 4.
- A sound factual knowledge of the topics covered
- Practical experimental skills
- An ability to apply basic mathematical techniques to simple physical problems
Assessment
Ongoing assessment based on end of topic tests (typically 20 to 45 minutes) at the appropriate time. The department has moved away from single multi-hour exams as these are not an appropriate preparation for the new WJEC modular GCSE.
