The Engineers of Tomorrow
25 November 2011Year 10 student Kathryn Slennett is all set for engineering stardom after being accepted onto a Nuclear Engineering Course run by the Smallpiece Trust, at Lancaster University in July 2012.
Capitalising on the exciting developments happening in the nuclear engineering industry at the moment, this course offers a hands-on experience which looks at some of the work being done in the field and the career opportunities available.
On this 2-day course, Kathryn and her coursemates will be:

Coming up with new ways of solving practical engineering problems under the guidance of experienced nuclear engineers

Discovering more about topical issues such as the environmental considerations attached to the technology behind nuclear programmes
-
Finding out about decommissioning and radioactive waste disposal

Developing a deeper understanding of the wide range of career prospects available to nuclear industry professionals
-
Taking part in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ exercise where groups will be pitching for funding before taking part in a design project

Meeting and working with real engineers from industry, to draw on their knowledge and put new skills into practice
-
Improving team building, communication, time management, problem solving, planning and presentation skills
The Smallpiece Trust are an independent charity providing programmes to promote engineering careers to young people through residential courses, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Days, STEM Clubs and STEM Teacher Training days.
