St Clare’s pupils help Haiti
10 March 2010Pupils from St Clare’s Independent School in Porthcawl took part in a fund raising assembly to help the people of Haiti this week. The ‘£2 coins for Haiti’ event was designed to raise £400 towards the appeal but in fact raised an impressive £506.
Biology teacher and Young Enterprise leader Katherine Coupland came up with idea of filling a large H for Haiti with £2 coins. After a brief talk about the events of 12th January in Haiti and a description of the level of suffering incurred by the people of the country the pupils filed up to the stage and placed their donations on the H. Whilst they were doing this the video to the Haiti relief single ‘Everybody Hurts’ was played for the rest of the pupils in the hall.
Children and staff from across the school were extremely generous and the H was filled with £2 coins very quickly. The Prep School also contributed by adding their small change.
Mrs Coupland commented, “I had the idea to try to raise money for Haiti by using either a map or a flag for the country but settled on a large H using colours of the Haitian flag. I was astounded with the level of generosity shown from pupils and staff at the school and delighted that the donations fitted onto the H and in total overflowed way above what we were expecting”.
