10 June 2010St Clare’s Under 11 Kwik Cricket team were celebrating after progressing through to the Mid Glamorgan final of the Asda Kwik Cricket competition. The team won each of their matches in the round robin competition against schools from Pencoed, Bridgend and Porthcawl, with the exception of Cwmfelin Primary who they lost to by a single run.
Both Cwmfelin and St Clare’s now progress to the Mid Glamorgan Final in Miskin Manor near Llantrisant on 23rd June.
The Asda Kwik Cricket competition is a national tournament which involves over 12,000 schools across the UK. The games consist of teams of eight players, batting in pairs for 8 overs per team.
The St Clare’s team consists of Tom Cogbill, Chris Matthews, Charlie Jones, Tom Allen, Joe Richards, Ben Collins, Harry Provstgaard and Sam Mahoney. Both Chris Matthews and Thomas Cogbill were selected for the Welsh under 11 Cricket squad recently and played against Hereford County in Pontypridd. Sam Mahoney is a talented rugby player as well as cricketer. He was recently selected to play for the West Wales B team at Eugene Cross Park and has captained the Bridgend School’s Under 11 District Team this season.
St Clare’s School entered the most teams into the local Kwik Cricket competition with three mixed teams and a boys team. Over 30 cricketers from St Clare's participated in the competition this year.
Catherine Barnard, Head of St Clare’s School congratulated all the participants, “Well done to everyone who participated in this competition. We were delighted one of our teams did so well and look forward to seeing how they get on in the final. We offer a range of sports in St Clare’s on the curriculum and as after school activities and it is very rewarding to see individuals and teams performing so well in sports they participate in whilst at the school”.
