What is Mathematics?
At Key Stage 3, students build on the skills, knowledge and understanding they have already acquired at Key Stage 2, and take on increasing responsibility for planning and executing their work. They maintain positive attitudes towards mathematics. They extend their mathematical thinking by solving mathematical problems,
working with increasing confidence and flexibility in solving unfamiliar problems.
Aims & Objectives:
- Develop mathematical knowledge and oral, written and practical skills in a manner which encourages confidence, enjoyment and perseverance
- Develop a feel for number, carry out calculations and understand the significance of the results obtained
- Apply mathematics in everyday situations and develop an understanding and appreciation of the part which mathematics plays and has played in the world around them
- Solve problems, present the solutions clearly, and check and interpret the results
Pupils study:
- Number
- Measures and Money
- Algebra
- Shape, Position and Movement
- Handling Data
Pupils learn:
- Calculating and measuring skills, applying them to a wider range of tasks
- Begin to use algebraic techniques with confidence
- Generate & manipulate algebraic expressions and equations
- Collect, represent, analyse and interpret realistic data
- Communicate and present findings clearly and precisely
- Use appropriate mathematical language and notation
Assessment:
- Pupils will be given regular homework and an end of topic tests.
- Each year group will also have an end of year exam in June that will cover all topics studied in that year.
