Why study Mathematics?
At Key Stage 4, students build on the skills, knowledge and understanding they have already acquired at Key Stage 3, and take on increasing responsibility for planning and executing their work. They bring previous experience and related knowledge to bear when considering mathematical or real-life problems and extend their understanding of the importance of precision and rigor in mathematics.
Aims & Objectives:
- Develop mathematical knowledge and oral, written and practical skills in a manner which encourages confidence, enjoyment and perseverance
- Develop a feel for number, carry out calculations and understand the significance of the results obtained
- Apply mathematics in everyday situations and develop an understanding and appreciation of the part which mathematics plays and has played in the world around them
- Solve problems, present the solutions clearly, and check and interpret the results
You will study:
- Number
- Algebra
- Geometry & Measure
- Probability & Statistics
You will learn:
- Consolidate knowledge and understanding of the number system and number relationships.
- Develop calculation skills to solve problems including work related problems, particularly management of personal finances.
- Establish greater proficiency in the use of symbolic manipulation and rigorous mathematical reasoning in algebraic and geometrical contexts.
Assessment:
There are 2 tiers of entry for this examination. The first paper in each tier will be a non-calculator paper.
Higher Tier: Grades A* - D
Foundation Tier: Grades C - G
