Why study ICT?

The study of ICT provides an insight into the significance and relevance of computers and communications in the work environment and everyday life. ICT is used in areas as diverse as manufacturing, education and medicine and ICT skills are valued in virtually all areas of business, education & society.

ICT is offered by universities either as a subject in its own right or in combination with a wide range of subjects, e.g. IT & Psychology; IT & Business; IT & Multimedia. The advanced skills you will develop will also be valuable in gaining many types of employment.

The course aims to develop the competence of students by allowing them to choose, use and design information and communication systems to carry out a range of tasks and to solve problems, making effective use of appropriate principles and techniques. The emphasis is on skills that can be developed to enhance student development in all areas.

 

Aims & Objectives:

  • develop the competence of candidates by allowing them to choose, use and design information and communication systems to carry out a range of tasks and to solve problems, making effective use of appropriate principles and techniques;
  • develop the capability of candidates through a broad and balanced experience of the range of information and communication systems and their applications;
  • develop the knowledge, concepts and skills which will enable the candidates to evaluate critically a range of information systems, including their own, with an understanding of their capabilities and limitations;
  • encourage candidates to gather, store, process and present information through activities in a range of contexts. It will also give candidates opportunities to design, implement and document information and communication systems and develop understanding of the wider applications and effects of information and communication technology.

  • The implications of the use of ICT

  • Information Retrieval packages
  • A Spreadsheet package
  • A Word Processing package
  • To retrieve information from the Internet and multi-media CD-ROMs
  • Multimedia presentations e.g. film making

 

Assessment:

 

For the full course, pupils will attend 4 lessons a week.  Assessment consists of:

  • Unit 1 - consists of a 1hr 30min exam which is based on the functional elements of ICT in the home and school context
  • Unit 2 - consists of a Controlled Assessment which will show a portfolio of the pupils own work
  • Unit 3 - consists of a 1hr 30min exam which is based on the functional elements of ICT in business and industry
  • Unit 4 - consists of a Controlled Assessment which will show a portfolio of the pupils own work, which will be based around a multi media presentation

For the short course, pupils will attend 2 lessons a week.  Assessment consists of:

  • Unit 1 - consists of a 1hr 30min exam which is based on the functional elements of ICT in the home and school context
  • Unit 2 - consists of a Controlled Assessment which will show a portfolio of the pupils own work
