What is Home Economics?
The Year 7-9 courses aim to develop an interest in all aspects of food and health through a practical approach to the subject. The importance of diet in relation to health is discussed and where possible put into practice in the preparation of various dishes.
Students will cook once a fortnight and will provide ingredients from home. Recipes will be given a week before the lesson and it would be advantageous if when possible students could be involved in the shopping and preparation of their ingredients for the lesson to make them aware of cost etc.
Aims & Objectives:
Students will:
- Develop an understanding of human needs and the influence of social, cultural
- and economic factors
- Organise resources effectively
- Learn how to work in a group or independently
- Develop an interest in food
- Use a variety of food preparation and cooking skills
- Interpret information and follow instructions accurately
- Learn the importance of eating healthily
- Investigate and analyse results
- Evaluate their own work and others in the group
- Understand the importance of personal and food hygiene
- Compare contrast and record
Pupils Study & Learn:
Year 7
- Safety in the home and particularly in the kitchen
- Basic First Aid
- Nutrition and Healthy Eating
- Food Labelling
- Using a cooker safely
- Practical work to include making Pizza, Flapjacks, Fresh Fruit Crumble, Stir Fry, Potato and Onion Bake. Creamy Spaghetti ,Spicy Chicken, Scones etc
Year 8
- Dairy Products: Milk, Cheese and Eggs
- Factors that contribute to Heart Disease
- Diet and Health
- Practical to include making Pancakes, Tortilla, Pasta Cheese, Cheese Pie, Cheesecake, Easter Biscuits, Meringues
Year 9
- Cereal products - The staple foods of many countries
- Vegetarians - Diets of various cultures
- Food Additives
- Practical work to include Bread, Pizza, Calzone, Spaghetti Bolognese, Chow Mein, Chinese Fried Rice, Chicken Balti, Fajitas, Onion Bhajis etc
Assessment:
Students will be tested after the completion of each topic.
An effort and achievement grade will be given at the end of each term.
Homework will be set when necessary e.g. to produce a fact sheet on cheese or to find the price of an item in order to complete an investigation.
