Why study History ?
History is a fascinating, dynamic study of the development of the modern world.
Through acquiring a good knowledge of historical events, people, changes and issues, students appreciate why society exists in its present form.
Students are provided with booklets containing most of the necessary information allowing dictation to be kept to a minimum.
The subject is taught through discussion during lessons and the use of various resource materials including pictures, documents, videos and CDs.
Aims & Objectives:
To enable students to:
- acquire an accurate knowledge and understanding of some of the key events of the 20th century
- acquire an understanding of political, economic, social and religious issues over the last century which have helped to shape the modern world
- develop good communication skills
You will study:
- USA (1910 - 1929) Gangsters; Prohibition; Ku Klux Klan; Jazz Age; Hollywood; Wall Street Crash; Foreign Policy
- Germany (1929 - 1947) Hitler's rise to power; Life in Nazi Germany; The Holocaust; Germany
in World War II. - USA and the World (1929 - 2000) Franklin Roosevelt & the New Deal; Racism; The Cold War; The Cuban Missile Crisis; Vietnam; The Berlin Wall; Arms limitation; Nixon, Kennedy; Popular culture; The changing role of women.
- Britain during World War I; Life in the trenches on the Western Front
You will learn:
- How to analyse, interpret and evaluate a range of different source materials
- An appreciation of change and continuity / cause and consequence
- Critical thinking and problem solving
Assessment:
- Regular internal assessment tests
- Written papers 1,2 and 3 are each worth 25% of the final mark
- There will be opportunities to sit some of the above papers at the end of Year 10 from 2011 onwards
- Coursework makes up 25% of the final mark.
