ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages
Mr R Gallagher
What is E.S.O.L ?
This is a course of tuition in “English for Speakers of Others Languages”, that is for pupils for whom English is not their first language. Pupils are encouraged to read widely in English and to speak and mix as much as possible with their English speaking friends.
ESOL has been taught at St Clare’s for many years. Currently our overseas pupils are from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Iran, and Germany.
The programme is a Year 7-13 scheme that is tailored to suit the ability and skills of the pupil, for whom a personal learning plan can be designed. A pupil newly arrived in Britain may not be able to cope at the same level as a pupil of the same year group who has lived here for some years.
The ESOL programme is not compulsory for pupils for whom English is not their mother tongue; it is an alternative means of improving fluency and may even be used in conjunction with the mainstream English course. In Years 7-9, pupils whose language skills improve sufficiently may rejoin the main English course.
Pupils whose understanding and use of English are of a sufficiently good level are encouraged to go on to study the standard GCSE syllabus.
Aims & Objectives:
The aim of the course is to improve the speaking, listening reading and writing skills of pupils to enable them to communicate in English with confidence and fluency.

You will learn:
To understand and communicate in English; reading, writing, listening & speaking with confidence
Assessment:
