What is English ?
English develops pupils in a number of ways: socially, academically, artistically, emotionally and morally. It provides them with the skills necessary to survive in the modern world and to be active and informed citizens. The department wants pupils to enjoy English and to reach their true potential in the subject.
Aims & Objectives:
English teaches pupils to communicate effectively in writing and speech. It encourages an appreciation of literature and a critical approach to reading media and non-fiction texts. It promotes reading for pleasure.
You will study:
English consists of the three components of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening which are integrated throughout the English curriculum. A text-based approach is adopted within the department, with the curriculum delivered through the study of a combination of literary and non-literary texts. English and English Literature are regarded as parts of a unified subject.
Pupils learn:
- To write in a range of forms for a variety of audiences
- To read with insight and understanding
- To speak and listen in different contexts
- To work individually and as part of a group
- To work independently.
Assessment:
All pupils in each year group are assessed in common reading and writing tasks throughout the year and also examined in these skills at the end of the Summer Term.
Classwork and homework tasks are assessed according to departmental criteria for Key Stage 3.
Self- assessment sheets are completed regularly by pupils to help them evaluate their speaking and listening skills. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about and comment upon their own and others' work.
