Why study English & English Literature?
English and English Literature are compulsory for all students at the beginning of Year 10.
The skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening are of vital importance in many areas. Not only are they essential in many careers, they also underpin successful study at all levels. A proficiency in them can also add immeasurably to an individual’s general quality of life.
Aims & Objectives:
The course is designed to develop students’ abilities to communicate effectively in speech, in writing and to listen with understanding. It should enable them to explore their literary interests and be enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers.
You will study:
Throughout year 10 and 11, GCSE English and English Literature are taught as an integrated course, although the pupils will be awarded two separate GCSEs in the subjects.
Pupils will read a range of prose, drama and poetry. These texts will form the basis for both controlled assessments and examinations at GCSE. A Shakespeare play, ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck and a selection of poetry from the WJEC Poetry Anthology will be studied by all pupils in Year 10. An additional novel and play will be studied in Year 11.
You will learn:
- To write in a range of forms and for a variety of audiences
- To read with understanding and insight
- To speak and listen with sensitivity in a variety of situations and to analyse spoken language.
Assessment:
The WJEC courses for English and English Literature are assessed in the following manner:
English:
- 30% Controlled Assessment 25% Coursework
- 30% Speaking & Listening 75% Examination
- 40% Examination
English Literature:
- 25% Coursework
- 75% Examination
Assessments and examinations will take place during both Year 10 and Year 11.
