Why Study Catering ?
The course is designed to give an introduction to the catering industry. It concentrates on the main areas of food production and service.. You will gain many skills from this course which will be useful in a wide range of jobs and in your personal life. Practical work is a large part of this course and you will cook every week in a double lesson. 60% of the overall assessment can be completed before the end of the course. This new course is to be delivered from September 2009.
Aims & Objectives:
- To achieve an awareness of the catering industry re career opportunities
- To effectively organise and manage resources in relation to the needs of clients in a multicultural society
- To provide opportunities to work as a team
- To gain knowledge of nutrition and the relationship between diet and health
Pupils Study:
- Structure of the catering industry
- Organisation & management of resources in a multicultural society
- Health and Safety requirements
- Basic nutrition and the relationship between diet and health
- Advances in technology in the catering industry
- Communication and social skills required
- Food preparation, presentation and service
- Hygienic handling and preparation of food
Pupils Learn:
- Organisational and time management skills
- How to work as a team
- How to interpret instructions, problem solving and evaluating
- Psychomotor skills in the effective use of tools and materials
- Measurement and estimation of area, size, capacity etc.
- To interpret information, follow instructions accurately and understand technical terms
Assessment:
There is one level of entry. Assessment consists of two units:
Unit 1: Two practical tests selected from six that are set by WJEC.
Unit 2: One written paper of 1h 15 minutes externally set and marked by WJEC.
