Careers

What is Careers Education?

A young person’s career is their pathway through learning and work. All young people need a planned programme of activities to help them make decisions and plan their careers, both in school and after they leave. The careers programme is designed to meet the needs of pupils at this school. It ensures progression through activities that are appropriate to students’ stages of career learning, planning and development.

The careers programme includes careers education lessons, careers guidance activities (group work and individual interviews), work-related learning (including one week work experience), action planning and recording achievement (using Progress Files). Other focused events are provided from time to time such as the Skills Cymru event. We work closely with Rob Evans, the school’s Careers Advisor from Careers Wales.

Year 10:

  • Mock Interviews take place in April. Mr Phil Morgan from the Education Business Partnership will prepare pupils beforehand. On the day local employers will attend school and each pupil will undertake a half hour interview.
  • Work experience is planned and implemented by myself and the work experience co-ordinator Emma Jenkins at Careers Wales. This will take place during Year 11, the first week of the Autumn term, this has changed from June to avoid clashes with modular examinations. Preparation will begin as early as possible to ensure pupils have every opportunity to gain a placement of their choice.

Year 11:

  • Option Choices, lessons are based on preparing pupils for post 16 options.  Year 11 is just a stage in a longer journey, GCSEs are not the end of the road – they are launch pads for what is to come; the world of work is changing and entry to university is becoming ever more competitive.
  • We aim to guide pupils to make the right AS option choices and progress towards their chosen course and career. As with GCSE, the AS option boxes are based on pupils’ choices.

Lessons:

Pupils will study Careers for one lesson every other week in Years 9, 10 & 11.
