Biology

Mrs K. Coupland & Mrs C. Lambert

What is Biology?

Biology is a study of the living world. Biology touches on a variety of topics ranging from the internal workings of organisms in physiology and the interdependence of living things in ecology, to social issues such as human influences on the environment. The study of Biology therefore encourages an appreciation of these issues and their implications as well as providing an insight into the living world. It is intended that the use of a variety of approaches to study will stimulate interest, promote understanding and give pupils an overall appreciation and sense of wonder at the living world.

Aims & Objectives

  • Introduce pupils to the world of Biology and provide an insight to its importance in their daily life.
  • To allow pupils to gain an understanding of the way the subject affects them and the world around them.
  • To give pupils adequate knowledge to enable them to make informed decisions about social issues such as healthy eating, pollution and conservation.

Pupils Study:

  • Year7 – Cells; Characteristics of Living Things; Classification
  • Year 8 – Healthy Eating; Teeth; Skeletal System; Reproduction
  • Year 9 – Digestion; Respiration; Photosynthesis; Food Webs; Healthy Living

Pupils Learn:

  • The basic differences and similarities of living things and understand why animals are classified into groups and species.
  • The components of food and what the body needs for a healthy growth and maintenance.
  • You will also learn about healthy living and the components needed to maintain a healthy body.
  • The biochemical processes that ensures that life continues i.e. respiration and photosynthesis.
