Why Study Biology?
Biology covers a range of topics – from the internal workings of organisms in physiology and the interdependence of living things in ecology, to social issues including human influences on the environment and the ethical considerations of genetics.
The study of Biology therefore encourages an appreciation of these issues and their implications, as well as providing an insight into the living world.
It is intended that the use of a variety of approaches to study, will stimulate interest, promote understanding and engender an overall appreciation and sense of wonder at the living world.
Aims & Objectives:
- To develop interest and enthusiasm for Biology
- To develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods.
- Acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works and its role in society.
- To appreciate the unique contribution of science to the objective understanding of the material world.
- To acquire scientific skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for progression to further learning.
You will study:
- Adaptation and Competition
- Cells
- Variation
- Respiration
- Evolution

You will learn:
- Scientific facts and ideas which will help you understand the world around you
- How to plan and carry out a range of investigations and to analyse the results
- How to organise and present information clearly
- How to use scientific vocabulary
- About the benefits and drawbacks of biotechnology
Assessment:
The GCSE Biology course is divided into four units, each of equal weighting.
The first 3 units will be assessed externally and will comprise of modular examinations that will be taken in the January and June of Years 10 and 11. These examinations will access knowledge and data handling skills related to biology.
The fourth component is the practical assessment and this will be assessed internally during lesson time, as part of the normal teaching process. It will be based upon the skills developed throughout the course. The practical work will take different forms, including fieldwork. The assessments will also vary, from planning tasks to following practical worksheets, to oral presentations.
